Selsey RNLI Lifeboats Conduct Search After Kayak Found Unoccupied

The inshore lifeboat (ILB) launched at 7.06 p.m. on Sunday 15th September after the UK Coastguards received a call from a vessel that had found an empty kayak approximately 1 mile off shore from Shore Road, East Wittering.

The vessel reported that the kayak was in good condition and had two fishing rods on board. The ILB was tasked to conduct a shore line search from Selsey to the position given by the vessel. With nothing found on route the ILB helmsman requested further assistance. At 7.34 p.m. the Selsey all-weather Lifeboat (ALB) launched to conduct a parallel line ahead search from the position that the kayak was found while the ILB continued a search close in shore. Selsey Coastguard team were searching along the beach. The weather on scene was wind force 1-2 sea state smooth with excellent visibility.

At 9.14 p.m. the Coastguards were informed that someone had reported that they had lost a kayak which matched the description of the one found and all units were stood down to return to station. Both Lifeboats returned to station and were rehoused, washed down and refuelled by 11.00 p.m.
