Selsey RNLI Inshore Lifeboat Launches to Report of Unidentified Object Drifting One Mile West of Selsey Bill

The UK Coastguard requested the launch after receiving information from an off-duty Selsey Coastguard officer about the object. The position of the object was approximately half a mile south of the entrance to the Medmerry Retreat.

The inshore Lifeboat launched at 3.45 p.m. with three volunteers onboard. At 3.52 p.m., as the Lifeboat approached the area, the Coastguard on the beach contacted them and conned them on to the target. The weather on scene was wind SW force 1-2, sea state smooth with overcast sky.

The object was identified as a tree trunk approximately 2m long with a 300mm diameter. As this posed a danger to small craft the trunk was taken ashore for the Coastguard officer to dispose of. The inshore Lifeboat was released at 4.01 p.m., returned to station at 4.07 p.m., and was recovered straight away washed down refuelled and made ready for service.

CREW: James Albrey (Helmsman), Andy Lee and Pip Skeet.
