On Saturday 9th March 2013 The Fisherman's Joy played host to the Selsey Lifeboat Auction. This was a major fundraising event for the new Shannon Class Lifeboat, due to be on Station in November 2014. The evening was organized by Tracy Riddolls, Chairman of the Selsey Lifeboat Fund Raising Committee, and the auctioneer and compère was Steve Power from Wave 105. Over 100 people, filling the lounge area, attended the evening, with cheque books at the ready.
First of all, a heads and tails game was played, a bottle of champagne being the prize, and was won by the Webmaster (woohoo!).
And then it was time for the actual auction. The bidding was fast and furious for the lots with hands flying up, flags being waved, anything! to catch the eye of Steve to get in the crucial bid. Tactics played a major role with bids coming in as the gavel was about to fall.
All the lots were generously donated by businesses and these included bottles of wine, Goodwood Revival tickets, race meeting tickets for Fontwell Park and a balloon flight from South Downs Ballooning, along with many other items. Of note were two paintings by Ken Hammond. Ken is a local artist from Bosham and had kindly donated two paintings; both of the boathouse but from different angles. These two lots saw a bidding war, as many people were keen to own them, but the eventual winners were Pete Horton and Trevor Jones (both local business men themselves). Congratulations, guys!
It was also said that I was in a bidding war against my husband for the Clay Pigeon Shooting and neither of us realized it. He was the successful bidder...
Bruce and his team at The Fisherman's Joy did a fantastic job and we can't thank them enough for their hospitality. Steve Power was his usual wonderful self and our thanks go to him, too. Always a great Ambassador for Selsey, we are truly grateful for his repartee and professionalism. Our thanks to all of the people and businesses who gave us our auction items, and where would we be without the fantastic people who came along to the auction and generously gave their hard-earned money to our worthwhile cause?
Tracy Riddolls, Chairman and organizer of the auction said "It was wonderful to see so many people having fun in the exciting atmosphere of the auction and I am overwhelmed by the response to this first, Fund Raising event of 2013."
Selsey Lifeboat Fund Raising Committee would like to thank everyone who attended and who all contributed to making it a profitable and thoroughly enjoyable evening.(Top of page)
