Selsey Lifeboat

Making a Wish Come True

Having heard that one of the wishes of a young local lad, Theo Bashford, who was very seriously ill and undergoing frequent treatment at the Marsden and St George's hospitals in London, was to help the Selsey Lifeboat Fundraising Team on Lifeboat Launch Day, we set about making his wish come true. Theo was fascinated by Lifeboats and their volunteer crews and really wanted to support his local Lifeboat crew.

Theo came along with his parents, and Aunt and Uncle, and was firstly presented with a Selsey Lifeboat Fundraiser polo shirt, kindly donated by Star Advertising, which he promptly and proudly put on. Armed with a collection bucket he went round Lifeboat Green making sure his bucket was well filled with donations before accepting the invitation to judge the Best Dressed Raft competition before the raft race. He joined the commentator on the raised dais for a good view of the raft race and the subsequent launch display with the Coastguard Helicopter. Before he left the dais he asked for the microphone and thanked everyone for their support for Selsey Lifeboat and all the volunteers for making his dream come true. Before he left, tired but excited, he was presented with a certificate of thanks from the Lifeboat Management Group for his efforts in fundraising and support on Lifeboat Launch Day.

Sadly, Lifeboat Launch Day was Theo's last day out as his condition deteriorated after that and, after a two-year battle with cancer, he passed away peacefully on 3rd October, having spoken a number of times about his time at Selsey in his last few days.

Theo's courage, determination and cheerfulness in the face of adversity was an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to meet him. We are all proud that we helped make one of his dreams come true. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
